What is botox for headaches?
Botox® was recently approved by the FDA to help patients with chronic migraine headaches, it works by blocking chemical changes on nerve endings. To treat chronic migraine, Botox® is injected into muscles of the forehead, the side and back of the head, and the neck and shoulders to produce a partial and temporary chemical “denervation” of the muscle. This causes the muscles to be too weak to contract. The dosage used to treat chronic migraine is very low since the muscles injected are small. Clinical trials* have shown at six months, after two cycles of treatment, those treated with Botox® had on average eight less days of headache each month. After 12 months, 70% of those treated had ≤50% the number of headaches that they had done originally.

How can you help?
South Bay Pain Doctors are highly experienced in administering Botox® as a treatment for migraines. It is important that patients have an informed discussion of their headaches and the options for treatment with a practitioner experienced in the diagnosis and management of headaches before a decision to use Botox® is taken. Thanks to our level of experience, South Bay Pain Docs have honed in on what type of patients tend to respond the best.
On visiting our clinic a detailed history of your condition will be taken, including symptoms, frequency of attacks and any medication tried in the past or currently taking. Keeping a migraine diary can help with this.
How can it help me?
Botox® is an FDA-approved, preventive treatment that is injected by a doctor every 12 weeks for adults with Chronic Migraine (15 or more headache days a month, each lasting 4 hours or more).
Botox® prevents up to 9 headache days a month (vs up to 7 for placebo). It may take several weeks to see a response and effectiveness improves over time. In clinical trials, patients showed a response at their 4-week evaluation. After 2 treatments (at 24 weeks), Botox® was proven to reduce headache days each month vs placebo.
Botox® therapy is not approved for adults with migraine who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. There are, however, other treatments available to patients with chronic migraine and headaches, which we can recommend.
