The World Health Organization has migraines placed as one of the 20 most disabling medical illnesses on the planet and with thirty-six million Americans suffering from them Botox has become a treatment method to help relieve pain from chronic headaches. At South Bay Pain Docs we tailor the Botox treatment to each patient’s specific needs to get him or her back to feeling and functioning their best as quickly and safely as possible.
How Does It Work?
Botox was recently approved by the FDA as a treatment option for patients suffering from chronic migraine headaches. It works by blocking chemical changes on nerve endings when it is injected into muscles of the forehead, the side and back of the head and the neck and shoulders to produce a partial and temporary chemical “denervation” of the muscle. This results in the muscles becoming too weak to contract, leading to relief from pain.
How Often Do You Need Injections?
Botox is injected every 12 weeks
Are You a Candidate?
Botox is a preventive treatment for adults, 18 years or older, with chronic migraines who have 15 or more days each month with headaches lasting 4 or more hours each day. Botox therapy is not approved for adults with migraine who have 14 or fewer headache days a month. There are, however, other treatments available to patients with chronic migraine and headaches, which we can recommend.
